Selected Reviews

Hilarious and heartbreaking...thoughtful emotional lessons and a powerful finale.
— The Washginton Post review of PolySHAMory
Wry wit and sharp detail. It’s not just a culture clash, but a collision of different universes.
— The San Francisco Chronicle review of AIN'T THAT RICH by Lily Janiak,
Robards delivers a dazzling performance as mesmerizing and powerful as it is funny.
— DC Metro Theater Review
Robards knows how to drop a punchline and put together a tightly wound story.
— Theasy
An engaging performer with an easy, natural presence.

Like a well-made vodka punch, Kate Robards’ well-made story sneaks up on you. It starts out as a lighthearted account of how she (like Horatio Alger!) overcame her impoverished roots by marrying rich, and ends up as a discomforting meditation on the relationship between money and self-image. Particularly now, as we agonize over issues of money and class and race, her story packs an unexpected wallop.

A few projects I’m happy to share:

LOOK INSIDE

Feature length screenplay. Rom-com.

Allie is a New York City comedian with a day job as an event planner who seems to have it all; passion (for the environment and stand-up), friends and fun. But after a disastrous one-night-stand lands her in the office of a sexy in-demand gynecologist, she’s forced to face a painful past that may be preventing her from living the present and future of her dreams.  With her dreaded 33rd Birthday looming, can she find healing, career success, and maybe even love, all in time to celebrate or will she LOOK INSIDE and experience the magical miracles waiting for her?

Winner: Selected Screenplay Women’s Comedy Film Festival 2023, Stage 32 Screenplay Quarter Finalist

PASTOR RIBEYE

Feature length screenplay. Rom-nom.

Feature length screenplay.

After a tumultuous youth and young adult life, Susie Q turns her life over to God… but just as she begins to think her past sins have been absolved, a church cookout gets messy. So does her relationship with the new Pastor. In an effort to cover up her transgressions, she “borrows” money from the church coffers and blows through money, congregants and her hope. As Susie Q’s sins stack sky-high, she prays for a miracle. Can Jesus and his followers forgive her (again) or was Satan in the potato salad?  This rom-nom movie is a muck banging, crime spree of a gem that will leave you praying for more and wondering if Susie Q and her ragtag team of hustlers and good hearted criminals can con their way to the finish line or will they finally find redemption that sticks to more than their fingers and rap sheets. This down-home wild rumpus skewers the hypocrisy of modern day religion and proves that the most important ingredient for your dish is something we all have.

PolySHAMory

Episodic Pilot. Complete Series Bible. Dram-com.

Lucy has everything she’s ever wanted. A prestigious degree from Stanford, a hot and successful husband, (their wedding was featured in Vogue) newly renovated home in the Bay Area, and a well-funded tech startup (Forbes 30 under 30— duh!?). The only problem? Lucy’s husband’s girlfriend has everything she’s ever wanted too. Armed with a polyamorous ethos and an abundance mindset, Lucy embarks on a sexcapade of polyamory amidst the luxe adventurous lifestyle that only the well-funded trust-funder-set can afford. But as the lovers, paramours and metamours butt heads and tails, all involved must make decisions that will change the course of their lives forever.

2019 Sundance Episodic Lab Finalist. (Alas, didn’t make the final cut… YET.)
